482 to 186: Your Complete Guide to Transitioning to Permanent Residency
The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) subclass 186 visa offers permanent residency, and for many 482 holders, the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream is the most accessible pathway.
Eligibility for the TRT Stream
To apply under the TRT stream, you must:
- Have held a 482 (or previous 457) visa for at least 2 years
- Have worked for your sponsoring employer for at least 2 years in the nominated occupation
- Meet the applicable skills, English, and health/character requirements
The Employer's Role
Your employer must:
- Be an approved standard business sponsor
- Nominate you for the 186 visa in the same (or closely related) occupation
- Commit to offering you full-time employment for at least 2 years
Age Considerations
The 186 visa has an age limit of 45 years at time of application, with exceptions for occupations on the exemption list and some Commonwealth-funded positions.
Processing
186 TRT applications typically take 9–22 months. Lodge well before your 482 expires to ensure you remain on a valid bridging visa.
When the TRT Stream Is Not Available
Not all occupations are eligible for the TRT stream. If your occupation is on the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), you may need an alternative pathway such as the Direct Entry stream or skilled migration.
CMG specialises in mapping 482 to 186 pathways for both employers and employees.
